Back in Black & White, Experiments in the digital darkroom

Novemeber 3rd, 5-7 p.m.

All the images in this show were shot in digital raw color format. My quest has been about finding a good color image and making it better in black and white.

The process has taken me on a re-examination of hundreds of image files through Apple’s Aperture program, on to Nik Silver Efex Pro, and ending with Photoshop.

I don’t love all the hours behind a computer, but I’m starting to like the results.

Attack of the Word Sharks

Art and David will entertain the audience with a wide-ranging
selection of short pieces from their collective collections.

Like a team sport, the smash/lob/dribble/thunk of their alternating voices will force listeners to remark,
“Wow, that’s even better than professional basketball!”

Art is a father, deep ecologist, bioregionalist, Colorado Green Party co-chair, performance poet,
newspaper columnist, county commissioner, rainbow, burner, spud farmer, fungophile, drummer,
chanter, and basketweaver.

David is the father of a soon-to-be-released book of essays, How Delicate These Arches:
Footnotes From the Four Corners, retired teacher, contributing editor and newspaper columnist,
poet, book collector and thrift store pirate.

Birds and Backroads of Montezuma County

“Birds and Backroads of Montezuma County”
by R. Christopher Vest.Friday, October 7Chris is a graphic designer and artist with a 25 year background in
pen and ink drawing, oil painting, photography and screen printing.

In the 1990s he embraced the computer revolution and developed
a way to merge painting and photography in the digital medium.

In the tradition of Alfred Stieglitz’s “Photo-Secessionist” movement,
the photographic image is transformed by digital dark room techniques
and intense painterly manipulation to create textures and effects that
attempt to bridge the unique properties of photography and painting,
a process he has dubbed the “painted photo montage.”

This exhibit is currently on display and will show through October.

Mesa Verde Mashers, a home-brewing club to which Chris belongs,
will host a beer-tasting to coincide with the opening.

Spruce Tree welcomes local author

Vila Schwindt on her collaboration with “Cortez,” from

Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series.

Thursday evening, from 5-7 p.m. at Spruce Tree.

Authors Dale Davidson, Vila Schwindt, and Janet Weeth have all been captivated by the

Four Corners culture and landscapes,and the enduring little city that could. Davidson and Weeth are

Southwestern archaeologists, and Schwindt is a writer/editor with a background in graphic design.

Captivated by the little city that sits on the edge of all that is beautiful in the American Southwest,

the authors came together with a mutual respect for a town that has struggled mightily to establish

itself in a valley with very little water but a full circle of fabulous views.

Heal of The Hand

A photo exhibit by Don Kirk celebrating the practical and artistic ways that we express ourselves through our hands, from playing a flute to hammering a nail.

The exhibit will remain on display through September with an Opening & Reception on Thursday, September 8th, from 5-7 p.m.

It’s also a re-celebrating of Don’s 65th birthday, on his 66th, because his 65th requires a do-over…

Retired Art Educators Karen Stapf-Harris and Barbara Grist are collaborating on a fun show featuring self portraits of their feet in various locations around the world. Bring your favorite foot photo to the show to hang on an interactive board featuring “feet in ART “, a theme that’s been used for hundreds of years.

Tad Spurlock is a photographer whose goal is to capture moments in time worthy of framing. As an airline pilot, seeing many places all over the United States, Tad has truly come to appreciate the magnificient wonders and simple beauty of the Southwest. A lifetime could be spent just chasing the light around the deserts and mountains, and Tad is always trying to catch that magical moment that waits for no one.
